You may have noticed a disproportionate number of books that I give a 5 star rating. You may think, "Is there anything this man doesn't like?" or "He gives everything 5 stars!" Nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is, I am EXTREMELY picky about what I read. I research novels before I read them. Reading a bad novel takes away from the enjoyment of reading, which is what it's all about for me.
I have gotten very good at determining whether a novel will be really good before I read it, which is the reason most of what I read ends up getting 5 stars. If a novel doesn't grab me in the first 10 or 15 pages, I'm gone. That doesn't mean it has to have instant action, but I can get a good feel about the writing, characters, and pace of the story that quickly. For example, I have finished reading Deep Sky and will post the review tomorrow, but I have not decided what I'm reading next. I'm about twenty pages into a book that I already know will be 3 or 4 stars at best. I'm still deciding if I want to continue or move on to something else. That happens a lot. The bottom line is if I give a book 5 stars, it is a 5 star book, even if every review you read here has 5 stars. There's a much greater number that I have started and stopped because I wasn't enjoying them.
