J.K. Rowling
I finished this book this morning. It is definitely not a book I would ordinarily read. The reason I chose to read it was simply all the hype and press that these Harry Potter books have received over the last few years. I don’t remember a novel or series of novels that have received as much attention as this one. Every time a book is released it is all over the news. Kids reading it everywhere, standing in line get the books the day they are released. And not just kids, but adults too…ranging in age all the way up to old men and women.
With the release of the most recent book in the series, I decided that I would read the first book and see what the big deal is. Fantasy novels of any kind have never interested me, but there must be something to this series, right? Other people that read the books as soon as they come out aren’t necessarily fantasy readers. Plus there’s the movies, and all the paraphernalia that seems to be everywhere.
The bottom line is that I enjoyed the book. It continued to get better the more I read. I liked the book well enough to read the next one in the series. Do I understand what all the hype is about? Not yet, but from what I have heard, each book gets better. So based on that, I could probably understand it.
The book is well-written and paced well…especially with it being the author’s first novel. This book is not as long as others in the series, so it doesn’t take too long to read. I would recommend reading the book. If you like it, you know that there are several more you can read, and if you don’t, you haven’t wasted too much time.
