The Gunslinger

It is always great to finish the first book in a series and know that there is plenty more to come…assuming the first book is a really good one. The Gunslinger is the first book in what is called the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I read this book at least 10 years ago.

When I read the book the first time, I was honestly lukewarm about it when I finished, and I remember it being a bit of a struggle to finish. That is why I never read any more from the series. Over the course of the last 10 years or so I have seen the fourth, fifth, sixth, and final book released. Since I wasn’t into reading the series I would ignore them in the store.

I got to thinking a while back that I would love to have a good series of books to read. I thought about the Dark Tower series and about how many people have told me they really enjoyed the books. I decided to re-read The Gunslinger, and if I liked it better this time, then I would read the entire series.

I just completed re-reading the book, and all I can say is I have no idea now what I didn’t like about it the first time around. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I think the thing that might have turned me off years ago was that it had a strong element of fantasy, I don’t know. I keep saying “read”, but I actually listened to the unabridged version of the book on CDs, going to and from work.

I can’t wait to start the next one, which I will tomorrow morning. It’s a good feeling to know that there are six more to go. If they’re as good as this one, I’m really going to enjoy the drive to and from work every day.
